Worked scenarios: what the numbers look like in real life
The restaurant bill. Dinner for six totals $212.40. A 20% tip is $42.48 — $7.08 each if the group splits evenly. The Tip Calculator handles the awkward version too: if one person only had a $12 appetizer, enter separate amounts and it splits the tip proportionally.
The salary reality check. A salaried employee earning $68,000 works 45 hours most weeks. That is $68,000 / 52 / 40 = $32.69 an hour at 40 hours — but the true rate across 45-hour weeks is $29.06. The Salary Calculator shows the effective hourly rate so overtime-free offers can be compared honestly.
The discount check. A $180 jacket is marked 30% off, then an extra 15% at checkout. Sequential discounts are multiplicative, not additive: $180 × 0.70 × 0.85 = $107.10, not 45% off ($99). The Percentage Calculator shows both answers side by side.

The Tip Calculator ends the group-dinner arithmetic argument — tip and total, split per person, for any custom percentage. These tools exist because the math is simple but the stakes of getting it wrong are real — a mis-tipped bill, an off-by-one age on a form, a discount computed backwards. Every result shows the steps so you can catch any typo in your own input.
Common mistakes these calculators help you avoid
- Percent change direction. A stock that drops 50% then gains 50% is still down 25% — percentage changes apply to different bases, and the calculator keeps the bases straight.
- Tipping on tax. Etiquette varies, but if you tip on the pre-tax subtotal the number is lower — the calculator shows both bases.
- Age rounding. "25" can mean anywhere from 25 years 0 days to 25 years 364 days — legal and medical forms want the exact figure.
- Splitting unevenly. Equal splits feel fair but sting the person who ordered less; compute per-person totals on actual orders when it matters.
Methodology
These tools use plain arithmetic with calendar-accurate date handling: percentage change is measured against the correct base, tips are computed on the amount you choose (subtotal or total), and age is counted in real calendar days including leap years, with February 29 birthdays clamped to February 28 in non-leap years. Numeric calculator inputs are processed locally in your browser and are not sent to our servers; optional follow-up forms are not currently enabled, so no contact information is requested after you calculate. Results are exact to the inputs you give them.

What percentage math does the Percentage Calculator cover?
The four calculations people actually need: X percent of a number, what percent one number is of another, percentage increase, and percentage decrease. Each result shows the working, so you can see which direction the change runs — useful for price changes, test scores, tips on a percentage basis, and discounts.
How does the Tip Calculator split bills?
Enter the bill total, choose or type a tip percentage, and set the group size. It returns the tip amount, the total, and the exact per-person split. A practical habit: check the per-person figure against what each person actually ordered — for uneven bills, have everyone total their own items first and tip on the combined subtotal.
How does the Age Calculator handle leap years?
It counts actual calendar days between dates and expresses the result in calendar years, months, and days. For calendar-age calculations, February 29 birthdays are clamped to February 28 in non-leap years; legal age or eligibility rules may use jurisdiction-specific conventions. It also gives totals in weeks, days, hours, and minutes, which is handy for forms, milestones, and countdowns.
